Bike, think!

I know a lot of people are going to call me all kinds of names after reading what I am going to say, but if I don’t say I’ll explode!

I would like to ask motor bikers to take a bit longer to THINK about the way they ride their bikes on the roads (specially motorways). Every morning, on my way to work, and in the afternoons, on the way back home, I get overtaken (and undertaken) by bikes that must, easily, be doing more than 100mph. I am tired of seeing them swerving around cars and completely breaking all kinds of road safety rules

Now, most of them have hi-viz vests with the “Think bike” logo on it, and it really annoys me that it has to be the car driver the one that has to be paying attention all the time to see where the bike is going to come from? Right? Left? Behind? Hold on…, but it’s them who drive like maniacs! On top of that I have to be careful not to run them over?

Why can’t I put a sticker in my car that says: Bike, YOU think of the car you’re undertaking! Maybe I should, actually…

Messy eating

Is it just me, or isn’t “messy eating”  just the best? Don’t you love it when you’re trying to eat something that just dismantles in front of you as you try to take a bite?

Yes, I love it.

I made a traditional “Pepito” sandwich today for lunch. For those of you who don’t know, a “Pepito” is a sandwich in baguette or French bread filled with grilled loin of pork, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo. And of course, if you’re anything like me, you’ll fill the bread until nothing else could be held inside.

Well, the first bite and everything exploded… Mayo everywhere, pork juices everywhere, tomatoes, lettuce… What and mess! But you know what? I loved it!

A lot of people complain about the fact that English people eat too many sandwiches, but the truth is that we also do in Spain! The difference is that the technique has been perfected in Spain, both because of the bread and because of the fillings. The traditional English BLT tastes so much better when made in French bread and the juices from grilling the bacon are added to the bread! But then, we have all kinds of “sausages” like chorizo, salchichón, salami, etc that have only started to enter the British market.

I say give the British a couple more years and the quality of the sandwiches will considerably improve!

Up movie

The story of Carl and Ellie as told in the cartoon film “Up” is probably one of the saddest stories I’ve watched in a long long time. It made me cry from the very beginning. Which I somehow found a bit annoying, because being a Pixar film, I was ready for a lighthearted, comedic film. I wasn’t ready for a heart-breaking, only-to-be-understood-by-adults storyline.

The problem was that the beginning, the scene setting was too adult-like (never in a million years would children understand the whole significance of Carl’s and Ellie’s friendship, relationship, and sad sad ending) but then they introduce all kinds of fantastic (as in “fantasy“, not “great“) elements more  adequate for a kiddie’s film (the talking dogs, the balloons lifting the house, etc). It just didn’t add up.

It is, however, a beautiful film that makes you laugh and cry, with its own moral at the end (follow your dreams and don’t postpone your adventures) and all that. But the underlying story of Carl losing his wife is so overpowering, that it leaves a very bitter taste in your mouth for hours and hours after the film has finished. I wonder if the creators realised this when making it and if that was their purpose…

Time for some footy

So here we go… The Football World Cup 2010 starts today. For 4 weeks people all over the world will forget about their problems, nations will forget the economic burdens that are punishing them, and will be stuck in front of the telly for hours on end watching the footy.

Tomorrow’s match between England and USA is going to be an interesting one. The BP Oil catastrophe has marred the beautiful relationship that has always existed between these two countries. There’s an apparent and clear animosity going on and I wonder if this will translate into dirty and angry football, or whether the teams will rise above it… As I say, it will be an interesting one to watch for reasons other than the actual game.

Of course, I am supporting Spain. I have bought one of those flags that you put in your car. I’ve seen people noticing it and eyeing it in a funny way, and I am a bit scared that my car might get vandalised by hooligans. So I’ve decided to only put it out in Spain-match days.

Spanish and English flags

Apart from that, I am not sure I am going to follow all the games. First of all, some of them are in the middle of the day in weekdays, so no chance of watching them at work. And secondly, because, let’s not hide it, I am not THAT bothered. People take football far too seriously. It is just a game, people! Just a game! And games were created for simple enjoyment, not suffering…

And of course, it is not just your average commoner who is excited about the World Cup. Everybody seems to be talking about it too (even me, hehe). It’s on the radio, it’s on the television, food and drinks, all product commercial/adverts seem to be using it as their main advertising focus. It is just too easy to get carried away with all the excitement. But remember, the more excited you get about it, the more disappointed you’ll be when your team gets kicked out!

Speaking about adverts… Since I have Sky+ I hardly ever watch any adverts. It’s too easy to pause live TV and then fast-forward and resume your programme once again. However, several adverts (with the World Cup theme) have caught my attention. These two are my favourite:

Ex-Twitter Updates

I gave up twitter a while ago, as I couldn’t see the point (because I already do “status updates” through facebook). However, I have been so busy lately that I haven’t had much time either to spend on Facebook!… I am neglecting my cyber friends. I am neglecting my own blog.. Shame on me…

So here’s a list of my would-have-been updates of the last few days/weeks:

29/05/2010 – Enjoying Eurovision at home whilst Jon is out on the piss with Mark. This year’s programme is not as amusing as last year’s (99% of the countries are taking it very seriously!) Stupid guy jumped onstage during the Spanish song… grrrrr…. I didn’t really liked the German song that much… I wish all countries would sing in their own language! Everybody except for 6 countries sang in English!

31/05/2010 – SOOO HOT this weekend. Lovely bbq in the garden yesterday and off to Winchester for the afternoon today.

01/06/2010 – going back to work after a bank holiday is 10 times worse than on a normal week :(

04/06/2010 – Gone to the Comedy Store in London for Jana’s birthday and had an amazing time. All 5 comedians (not well known ones) were fantastic in their own style and really made me laugh out loud.

05/06/2010 – We celebrate our first wedding anniversary this weekend. Jon takes me to the New Forest for a horse ride and we will be having dinner in a fantastic Italian Trattoria Restaurant that had a honourable mention in the Michelin guide this year!

06/06/2010 – Really amazed at how beautiful the new forest is. It feels like we are hundred of miles away from Basingstoke, when in reality we are less than one hour drive away!

07/06/2010 – Monday morning. In the car on our way to work we’ve realised how little we like Chris Moyles. Have decided to change radio station and have come across “LBC” from London. It’s a “talk radio”, ie, they only speak and there’s no music. We are quite surprised that we are enjoying it so much… We’re becoming grumpy old people listening to this station! All they do is moan moan moan, and we love it!

09/06/2010 – what happened to the nice weather? I hope it  comes back for the weekend. Chris J and Helene will be visiting on Sunday and I fancy another BBQ!!
