Where was I?

Tomorrow is 30 years since John Lennon’s death. There’s an interesting article on the BBC news website about it and they throw the generic question of: Where were you when so and so happened?

Here’s mine and more:

Where was I when John Lennon died? (8 December 1980)
I was two and a half years old. I don’t think I was going to kindergarten yet. So I most probably was at home with my mum. I didn’t became aware of who John Lennon was or that he was dead until probably 12 years later.

Where was I when Princess Diana died? (31 August 1997)
I was in London, actually. And I remember seeing the newspapers the following day and not fully understanding what was going on. Maybe I just didn’t want to believe. Someone then explained and my first reaction was: That can’t be true!

Where was I when the Berlin Wall fell? (9 November 1989)
I don’t remember that day very accurately. I was 11 years old. But I remember watching lots of images on the telly and my older brother saying that he would have loved to be there (he was 18 then, and a real anarchist then)

Where was I when the Twin Towers were attacked? (11 September 2001)
I was in Granada, spending a few days at a friend’s house whilst I retook some of my September exams. We were in a student restaurant near Arabial and we saw the news on the telly. We were about to go to the library to revise for our exams, but instead we went back to the flat to keep watching the news.

Where was I when the Madrid terrorist attacks? (11 March 2004)
I was in my bedroom doing nothing, when my mum came in and told me to come and watch the telly. It was all over the news and I remember that I cried.

Where was I when the London terrorist attacks? (7 July 2005)
I was in Almuñecar, coming back from teaching a group of French teenagers. I heard about it on the radio on my way back home and I was petrified. I couldn’t contact anyone in the UK until very late in the evening. The telephone lines were so busy that I was impossible to get through.

And where were you?

I’ve just heard in the news that FIFA have granted the hosting of the Football World Cup 2018 to Russia, and the 2022 one to Qatar.

Huge surprise for the English people, who despite the efforts from the BBC to ruin our chances, still had hope to get it.

I know nothing about Russia’s or Qatar’s interest in football, but I can guarantee that they can never reach the levels of fanaticism that exist in the UK. English people breathe football, feel football, live football. There isn’t a Monday morning without the usual discussion on the weekend games. It is the one thing that unites this country!

I would like to know the reasons behind choosing Russia over England. I’ll bet they are all political and not sporting. Or maybe it’s all Fake Paul the Octopus’ fault… (some people say the real one died before the end of the World Cup this year…)

Whatever the reasons behind it, whether political or else, I am convinced that this decision is really going to piss off the FA big time… Only time will tell what’ll happen next…
