‘What if we had to go back?’ is a question that we have been asking ourselves for almost half a year now. Unlike you, we don’t have our answers ready. Hubby has become disenchanted with corporations and it’s highly unlikely that he lands a permanent position in research in the UK (or indeed anywhere else). Another two-year postdoc is out of the question, and any job I can find would be insufficient to keep us both until he makes up his mind. What would we like to do with our lives after this? Would we go back to Spain and become bakers or day labor in agriculture? Do we want to set up an organic orchard and make homestading our lifestyle? Self-employment in Spain is definitely not an option for me, the taxes are too high and I couldn’t afford to hold on until the business took off.
We don’t really take the going back to Spain seriously. But with the job market as is and all things considered, a simple life in a rural setting is something we can’t help but fantasize about.
I ask myself the same question, in a slightkt different way. I compare my life five years ago with the present day.
Back in my mind I still have the “feeling” that something will be terribly wrong again. It’s like happiness doesn’t stay longer in my life and I have been happy for quite a long time now.
One thing is clear, I do not imaging myslef in Spain now, not working there, earning less than nothing and having to work twice as much so I don’t have time to be sociable…
But, you never know…
@morti, the idea of living in the country side and living off the earth is something that I have also fantasized about many many times.. Unfortunately they are also fantasies.. Living off the countryside is ironically quite expensive..
@Elena, I do not imagine myself in Spain now. Not now, not in quite a few years yet, if I ever decide to go back for good at all. But my mind wanders sometimes and I imagine all these situations and scenarios, and I have to come up with solutions
