I’m not weird, am I?

Some people can’t understand certain aspects of me. Which is fine, I don’t have a problem with that, because if everybody was the same and thought the same, the world would be a very boring place. And everybody is entitled to their own opinion at the end of the day..

The thing is that I’ve found myself somehow involved in a private conversation among some German Spaniards (that’s Spanish people living in Germany) where they are talking about buying a property (opposed to keep renting).

So far so good (I can’t talk here, I’m on my second owned house now, like a good “British” person :P )

The problem lies when everybody in this conversation agree with the principle that living in the city is a hundred times better than living in the countryside. Living in the countryside, apparently, is suicide. One of this German Spaniards has even come up with the term “mierdapueblo“, which in English means something like “shittyvillage” to refer to the place she lives in.

Now, I do understand that living in a city can give you more in some aspects, like choices of entertainment, better shops with better offers, everything seems to be “closer”, etc. However, understanding this does not make me want to have it for myself.

Hence my original question: I am not weird for preferring the country to the city, am I?

There are still people out there who go to live to the country out of personal choice, right?

Because the first thing I want to do when I win the lottery (it will happen one day, I’m sure) is to buy a house in the country, have land and hire a farmer who will work that land, have animals and look after them and breathe the gorgeous fresh air every morning.

Oh yes, that sounds like a plan.

One day…

You most definitely are NOT! Here’s a thought I hope no one will be offended with: you moved to the UK because you wanted to, and you’d move out to the country because that’s your darling wish. Many German Spaniards and myself at present are differently situated: we didn’t choose the country, or the US, it ‘came given’ at some point in the relationship pack. You don’t usually give up a relationship after a few years of happiness because your partner finds a job outside the city you’d like to live in. If a situation arose in which you HAD to move to, say, Birmingham, would you divorce your husband to stay in the country? It’s decision time, and you start thinking of it as a temporary thing, you can’t imagine being stuck up there for the rest of your life. Then five, ten years go by and you find yourself in the exact same place you didn’t want to live in in the first place. Only splitting up at this point seems even more idiotic than back then when you decided to move, way too much trouble to go through only because you can’t grow your own tomatoes after work. Substitute ‘grow your own tomatoes’ by ‘have a cocktail after work’ and there you go. I don’t think it’s the ‘living in the country’ that’s universally despised, the hatred comes with the circumstances that led you there.

Thanks Morti (I’m definitely offended by anything you say!). It is something I hadn’t thought about. And you’re quite right. The circumstances that led me here are completely different to those who “need” to live in a city that gives them “more”. I came to the UK for love, but love to England.
And I am thankful that I am happy where I am and my happiness doesn’t depend on anything else other than me.

When Im rich I will have 2 houses…one in the country side, in NL if I can choose because my husband is going to be dutch, and on the beach somewhere warm in spain…lets say the canary islands or andalucía :p (ssshhh let me dream!!)

And no, you are not a weirdo, I also prefer country side or small places :)
