Believe it or not, these are my most Frequently Asked Questions:
– Do you think in English or Spanish?
I think in English when in England and in Spanish when in Spain. Sometimes I struggle to find the word I’m looking for and tend to resort to the other language in order to find an appropiate term.
– Why do you prefer England to Spain?
That is a very difficult question to answer. I have always liked England. I was 17 the first time I came, I was in the middle of a teenage crisis and I found freedom and peace in this country. Later on in life, when I came for a year to study at Portsmouth University, I realised that I could be myself in here. The place, the people, the customs, they all helped me realise who I really was and what I wanted in life. In Spain I was surrounded by too many “ghosts of the past”, things or people I wanted to forget about, I also felt constrained to lead a life that I wasn’t sure I wanted to follow. Plus, life in Spain for people of my age is really hard. Britons can only see Spain as the sunny, fun place they go on holiday to. But life in Spain for fellow Spaniards is difficult. Too many narrow minded people around, far too many old-fashioned customs.
– Is it true that Spanish people sleep “siesta” everyday?
Do all Britons stop everything they are doing at 5pm to have tea and scones?
